Special Hikes

In addition to our facilities that are open to the public, the MCL offers special hikes through the Children’s Eternal Rainforest (Bosque Eterno de Los Niños, or BEN) on restricted public access trails. These trails cover large transects and cross through over 20 thousand hectares of the BEN. They are difficult to access, and for this reason the following special conditions must be considered:

  1. Restricted access trails are only open to the public during the summer months, which start in February and end in May. Reservations are subject to change depending upon the current weather conditions.
  2. Visitors that decide to participate should be in good physical condition, and should be able to handle constant hiking for up to 7 hours or more per day.
  3. The collection of any specimens (plants, animals, seeds, rocks, soils, etc.) in the BEN is prohibited.
  4. Smoking and the drinking of alcoholic beverages in the BEN is prohibited.
  5. Permission to take pictures or videos must be obtained before the hike.
  6. Visitors will be accompanied by at least two of the park guards from the Monteverde Conservation League. The cost for this service is $70.00 daily per guard. Our park guards carry radios, are familiar with the trails, and they always work in pairs.
  7. The MCL does not recommend any guide to lead the hikes, nor do we permit visitors to enter the trails with only personal guides. Our park guards must be present at all times.

The above stated conditions apply for the following trail systems:

    • San Gerardo- El Castillo (Laguna de Arenal)
    • Monteverde - Pocosol

The proceeds from these hikes are allocated to our Protection and Monitoring Program.
